Il Borgo, Todi countryside, Umbria
The Project
Fortified hamlets, villages and towns form the mainstay of Umbrian urban centres. Open villages and simple groups of farm houses have survived beyond the Middle Ages and numerous free-standing houses can be found dotted over the countryside. However, it is the fortified “borgo” from the Middle Ages that remains the most common form of grouped houses in this Region. It is the organisational base for the surrounding area made up of agricultural lands and road networks. This is where one can discover the Umbria of another era, enriched with fortified settlements where over the centuries the local population has “fortified” itself. We have re-created our “Borgo” in the countryside between Perugia, Todi and Orvieto, set amongst the green hills in a dominant panoramic position.
